What changes to expect in your life after ungoing gastric bypass surgery both in the near term and long term.

Even before one could imagine and think about their life after gastric bypass surgery, one must first subject oneself to a comprehensive discussion with ones doctor if the surgery would be the best approach. It is required that before deciding to attempt such surgery, one must have tried and failed significant weight loss medication and / or exercises. One must understand that the surgery is not a quick solution to achieve weight loss. Gastric bypass surgery is just the first step towards weight loss; it is a journey that comprises lifestyle changes as well as the patience and commitment to go through the whole recovery process. The good thing is, one is not to suffer alone, that is if suffer is the correct term to use. A team of professionals will be on hand to help throughout the recovery process to aid you physically, emotionally and psychologically.

Significant diet change would apply right after the surgery. There is a diet progression designed to be gentle on the patient’s new stomach which, by reducing the food intake, would still keep the stomach and the body healthy as much as possible. Diet progressions vary depending on the type of bariatric operation one has had. The success of the surgery will depend on the discipline, determination and commitment the patient would exert in following the diet progression. It would require taking multivitamins and mineral supplements to meet the daily nutritional requirements of the body since in reducing the food intake, the minerals and vitamins absorbed by the body would also decrease. Also, it is essential that the patient drinks a lot of fluid in between meals to prevent dehydration. The patient must also keep in mind that he or she must take things as slowly as possible to observe his or her tolerance with food so as to keep intake as gentle as possible on the patient’s new stomach.

A low-fat and sugar free diet is encouraged among the patients. Fats may not be easily digested by the body since the it is a malabsorptive surgery, meaning there is a huge part of the stomach and small intestines that is bypassed hindering the absorption process. High-calorie foods and carbonated drinks, especially alcoholic beverages, are strongly discouraged since they might cause discomfort and trigger health problems such as the dumping syndrome. The alcohol tolerance of the body is also to weakened, which is why it is not advisable for any bariatric patient to drink any alcoholic beverage after the surgery; if and when the patient does, he or she must drink only in minimal amount for they can easily become tipsy and get drunk sooner than usual.

Going back to work is also another issue after the surgery. The ability of every patient to resume to work would depend on the nature of their work and the type of surgery they had. Patients must not rush their recovery since it might cause post gastric bypass surgery complications, side effects and dangers to arise.
